This is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s south of the Twin Cities, in the middle of nowhere, off of 169. It’s where I have bought a majority of the 200+ root beers in my root beer bottle collection, and where I bought the next 26 root beers I am going to review.

When I was in college in St. Paul, I had a football game at Gustavus, and when I checked my phone after the game I had a voicemail from my girlfriend (now wife) about a place that had a sign saying they had like 80 different kinds of root beer. Obviously I was excited and went there as soon as possible. They had so many different kinds that I had to go back more than once just to get all of them.

They are open only about half the year, usually May or June until November. So while I lived in St. Paul I made it a habit of going there every year. Now that I live in Connecticut, I don’t get to go there very often, and in fact it had been three years until I went there in September 2015. This time their sign said they had well over 100 kinds of root beer. And they had added on, making the place even bigger.

The building is a big yellow barn, which is actually what I call it when I talk about it (The Big Yellow Barn). It is a candy store, but I never get out of the soda section long enough to look at everything else.

Here are some pictures of the soda section inside the barn:

Best Damn Root Beer

022 - Best Damn Root Beer

Producer: Best Damn Brewing Co., St. Louis, MO
Obtained At: Stop and Shop in Stamford, CT
Container: 12 ounce glass bottle
ABV: 5.5%

Here is another alcoholic root beer. I really like that these are catching on, but I have yet to find one that I think is truly perfect. I had never heard of this one until I saw it in a liquor store in Newington, Connecticut. I didn’t have the budget for it then, but only a week or two later I saw it at the grocery store and had to pick it up. The bottle and label is fairly basic, but I like it. The name is straightforward, but let’s see if it’s true. The taste is quite good; very sweet and definitely alcoholic. However, the taste doesn’t really set this drink apart from Not Your Father’s, Coney Island, and Sprecher. I think my two main issues with this drink (and other hard root beers) are the flavor is too sweet to drink more than one at a time and it tastes too much like root beer schnapps (I think if there was more head it would taste more like beer/soda than schnapps). Anyway, if you want to try a hard root beer, this is a good place to start.
